Tokyo-based Creco Lab Inc. deals with the planning, creation, and sale of eco-related products. They are currently focusing their energy on “Wallpaper from the Woods,” which uses beautifully grained natural wood, and “Paper from the Woods,” which has proactively incorporated the use of sustainably harvested wood obtained through the practice of kannbatsu, or the thinning of woods. The unique graining patterns and beauty only seen in wood of true quality and the subtle smell of wood give these products a sense of luxury and warmth distinct from other products.

“Paper from the Woods” uses domestically produced sustainably harvested wood.

Kannbatsu is the process of thinning woods. In artificially created forests, this procedure is often carried out, felling the smaller, weaker trees in order to enable the growth of the larger, stronger ones. Failing to perform this practice leads to a forest full of thin, unhealthy trees that are of little use.

This process has been carried out in many of the artificially created woods in this country. 10 million hectares worth of woods, or 41% of all forestry in Japan, has been artificially planted, and it is said that approximately 40% of these require thinning. The wood harvested during the process of kannbatsu is known as sustainably harvested wood. Therefore, it can be said that it has less of an impact on the environment to use the trees felled during this procedure rather than cutting trees for the purpose of processing them into wood. What we believe at Creco to be environmentally friendly is to create products out of sustainably harvested and domestically produced wood, and through this process, to increase demand for these types of materials and thus contribute to the improvement of the forestry environment of this nation.

1) Wallpaper from the Woods

Details:
- Utilizes innovative technology that has enabled the cutting of natural wood into extremely thin slices, allowing unprecedented flexibility of application.
- Boasts a thickness of only 0.23 mm. This has allowed the creation of a wallpaper that, if applied parallel to the grains of the wood, can be plastered on curved or bumpy walls.
- Can be applied by interior workmen, so in comparison to past wood-based wallpaper, a decrease in total cost (cost of everything including application costs) is possible.
- Created so that the back sheet can be separated into two separate sheets, thus allowing easier peeling and facilitating renovation.
- Has been approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport as a product meeting environmental standards.

- Used at Starbucks Kyoto Research Park Store. It matches beautifully with the shop’s interior atmosphere.

2) Paper from the Woods

Details:
- Thinly sliced sustainably harvested wood plastered together with paper.
- Comes in two types, where the sustainably harvested wood is plastered on to either one or two sides of the paper.
- Has a subtle smell of wood.
- Has a feel of wood that is more natural and stronger than artificially printed wood grain patterns.
- Products created from “Paper from the Woods” can be used as novelty items.

Past cases of usage:
- Used at 25 stores of Natural Lawson, where the company’s environmental thoughts and activities were printed on it. Because Natural Lawson’s eco-friendly concepts were written on paper created from sustainably harvested wood, this form of advertisement enjoyed great success. In addition, “Paper from the Woods” can be printed on clearly and beautifully.
